WHY IS PLIÉ SO IMPORTANT IN BALLET?

Plié is one of the most fundamental movements in ballet, and it is much more than simply bending the knees.

A strong, well-executed plié helps dancers to:

• Develop strength and control through the legs
• Improve balance, stability and posture
• Prepare the body for jumps, turns and travelling movements
• Create softness and fluidity in movement
• Protect the joints by teaching dancers to bend and land safely
• Build the foundation for almost every step in ballet

From a simple demi-plié at the barre to the deepest grand plié, the quality of a dancer’s plié can have a huge impact on their overall technique.

At Karen Shiel School of Dance, we encourage our dancers to understand not just how to perform a movement, but why it is important. Strong foundations create confident dancers.

Plié may be one of the simplest ballet movements, but it is one of the most important.

8 weeks to go till our show STARS
It’s getting exciting now, finishing choreography and starting in costume designs.

Looking back on our past home comp and looking forward to September to restart comps. Lots of new and improved routines and lots of heard work over the summer

It might be the school holidays but dance classes run as normal.
Consistency is the key. Keeping up your regular classes ensures you don’t have any drop in your achievement. It’s also a great time to start a new class or join us for the first time.

Our next show STARS will be at the Royalty Theatre 4th October

One question we get asked is “do you have space?”
Well yes we do because if this barre is full there are another three on the other side, if that gets full we put one in the centre or split the class into another studio (we gave 3) we can always bring in extra teachers too if needed so YES we have space, our studio is so much bigger than it looks from the outside.

Established since 1998 we offer dance classes to children and adults in the Sunderland, Washington, houghton-le-Spring and surrounding areas. We are proud to be associated with British Theatre Dance Association, ID-Company, Acrobatic Arts and Progressing Ballet Technique. We offer our students the opportunity to gain recognised graded qualifications, perform in professional theatre shows and take part in local and national competitions.
